A friend of mine who worked in Tokyo for a few weeks told me everybody knows it is going to happen. They expect the death toll and devestation to be massive. Yet they all live as if it never is going to happen. And so do we when it comes to our environmental issues.
Al Gore is in his movie An inconvenient truth http://www.climatecrisis.net/ talking about the window of opportunity to do something between ignorance of the problem and the despair of the disaster.
Environmentally we are swiming in an ocean of unnaturall chemicals http://www.chemicalreaction.org/. Newborn childs are exposed to so much bromated flame retardants small brain damage is becoming more probable than inprobable http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=145&rss=1399&a=586874 . The fish is sick http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=597&a=585670&previousRenderType=6 . Where we live the fish have almost stopped to breed and is not recomended to eat.
And thats the top of the iceberg.
The European Union has finally come to an agreement on REACH http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1042&a=593556&previousRenderType=6 , but like the Kyoto protocoll, it's a good start that in the end is far from enough.
And while all this is happening, the overall public is tired of more 'crisis reports'. Like true citizens of Tokyo, we have decided to ignore the problem. Head in the sand.
Earthquakes we can do nothing about, but the chemical laws and usage we can, but not while ignoring the problem. We have got a windows of opportunity to fix our environmental hazards and problems. That windows is about 20 years big, so we need to get started. Or despair takes over in thew end when its too late to do enough in time.
